What is NAD+?

NAD+ is a coenzyme found in every living cell that is essential for turning nutrients into energy and for running many repair and signalling processes. Its full name is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide.

NAD+ is often discussed as if you could swallow it directly, but the body largely rebuilds it from smaller building blocks. That is why it is closely tied to a NAD+ precursor such as NMN or nicotinamide riboside. NAD+ also powers the sirtuins and supports the mitochondria, which links it to energy and healthy ageing.

NAD+ interests people focused on longevity, energy, and cellular repair, since its levels tend to fall with age. The catch is that raising a laboratory measurement of NAD+ is not the same as proving a benefit you will feel, and much of the human evidence is still early. Precursors raise NAD+ more reliably than swallowing NAD+ itself.
