KSM-66 vs Standard Ashwagandha: Which Extract Should You Take?

AE·ORA offers ashwagandha in two forms — a simple organic whole-root capsule and a standardised KSM-66 formula. They share a name, but they answer different questions. This guide explains the real difference so you can pick the one that fits how you actually use it.

First, what ashwagandha does

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an adaptogen — a botanical studied for helping the body regulate its stress response, largely by modulating cortisol. Its active compounds are steroidal lactones called withanolides. The amount and consistency of those withanolides is where the two products diverge.

Standard (whole-root) ashwagandha

Our Ashwagandha is a two-ingredient formula: organic Withania somnifera root plus black pepper for absorption. It is the traditional form — the whole root, minimally processed — and the more affordable, everyday option. What it does not do is guarantee a specific withanolide percentage batch to batch, because it isn't standardised to one.

KSM-66

KSM-66 is a branded, full-spectrum root extract standardised to a minimum of 5% withanolides and studied in dozens of human clinical trials. Standardisation is the point: every capsule delivers a verified, reproducible dose rather than a range. In Ashwagandha Plus it is dosed at 600 mg and paired with maca, ginseng, L-arginine and methylated B vitamins.

Which should you choose?

Choose standard Ashwagandha if you want a clean, traditional, single-ingredient adaptogen at an everyday price. Choose Ashwagandha Plus with KSM-66 if you want a clinically-standardised dose and the additional botanicals that support energy and recovery alongside stress. Neither is “better” in the abstract — standardisation buys consistency and evidence; whole root buys simplicity and value. Frequently asked questions

Is KSM-66 worth the higher price over standard ashwagandha?

If you want a dose that matches the amounts used in clinical trials, yes — standardisation to 5% withanolides is what makes the dose reproducible. If you simply want a traditional daily adaptogen and are price-conscious, standard whole-root ashwagandha is a sound choice.

Can I take ashwagandha at night?

Many people take ashwagandha in the evening because it is studied for supporting a calmer stress response. Others prefer the morning. Both are common; consistency matters more than timing.

What are withanolides?

They are the active steroidal compounds in ashwagandha responsible for its adaptogenic effects, and the marker used to standardise quality extracts like KSM-66.
