What is Deep Sleep (Slow-Wave Sleep)?

Deep sleep, also called slow-wave sleep, is the deepest stage of non-dreaming sleep, marked by slow brain waves and the hardest arousal threshold of the night. It is when much of the body's physical repair and restoration takes place.

Deep sleep is one part of overall sleep architecture, sitting apart from lighter stages and from REM sleep, where dreaming and memory work happen. It tends to cluster early in the night, and its onset is shaped by falling cortisol and rising calming activity linked to GABA. People often use deep sleep loosely for any good night, but technically it names one specific stage.

Prioritising deep sleep helps people who wake unrefreshed despite spending enough hours in bed. The catch is that you cannot force a fixed amount of it, the body prioritises deep sleep on its own, and total need declines naturally with age. How is it different from REM sleep?

Anyone waking tired despite adequate time in bed benefits from thinking about deep sleep. It is the right focus when quality, not quantity, seems to be the issue.

Obsessing over a deep-sleep figure from a wearable is unhelpful, as consumer trackers only estimate stages roughly. Chasing the number can create anxiety that harms sleep more than it helps.
