What is Magnesium Oxide?
Magnesium oxide is magnesium combined with oxygen, the cheapest and most widely sold form of the mineral. It carries a large amount of magnesium by weight, but the body absorbs only a small fraction of it, so most passes through the gut unused. That poor absorption is why it works as a laxative and why it is a weak choice when the aim is to actually raise magnesium levels.
On a label oxide looks strong, because so much of its weight is elemental magnesium, which is exactly where it can mislead. The forms people reach for instead are absorbed far more completely. Magnesium glycinate is bound to glycine and stays gentle on digestion, the usual pick for sleep. Magnesium citrate absorbs well but can loosen stools at higher doses.
